GOES-R Data Viewing Is Almost Fully Ready! (credit: NOAA Satellite and Information Service)1/23/2017 DISCUSSION: Here is a neat update from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Satellite and Information Service about the somewhat recently launched GOES-R satellite.
Get ready to stare! Tomorrow, we'll unveil the first images from GOES-16 right here! GOES-16 rocked into space on November 19, 2016, at 6:42pm from Florida's Kennedy Space Center. Since then, NOAA and NASA scientists and engineers have been in close contact with the spacecraft, checking its vitals and testing its instruments. Although the satellite won't be fully operational for a few more months, it has begun to return some preliminary, non-operational data and imagery. Offering five times faster weather coverage, better data for hurricane tracking and intensity forecasts, real-time mapping of total lightning for improved severe weather prediction, and advanced warning of space weather hazards, GOES-16 will be a game-change for weather forecasting in the U.S.!
