Reflecting on the Anniversary of the Bhola Cyclone! (credit: This Day in Weather History)11/14/2016 DISCUSSION: Back on 12 November 1970, the deadliest tropical cyclone ever recorded, and one of the deadliest natural disasters in the modern era unfolded across East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh). The Bhola Cyclone first formed over the Bay of Bengal on 8 November before travelling north with time. This cyclone reached peak intensity (the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane) on 11 November, and made landfall on the coast of East Pakistan the following afternoon. The Bhola Cyclone killed an estimated 500,000 people and caused nearly $90 million in damage (1970 USD). Hence, there is no debate whatsoever that this event was one for the record books!

DISCUSSION: As we look back 76 years ago today, there was quite an impressive weather event which unfolded across the Midwestern United States. This event unfolded as the result of a low pressure system quickly approaching this region from points to the northwest of there. As this low pressure system approached both northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, the warm front which was supplying warm air into these areas overnight from 10 to 11 November quickly passed through. As it did so, the air temperatures rapidly plummeted from the lower 50's to lower-to-middle teens within 6 to 12 hours. This rapid drop in temperature facilitated a fairly rapid change in precipitation type from liquid to frozen when rain quickly changed to sleet and then to snow soon after that time. As a result of this rapid change in surface conditions, many people were caught completely off-guard with no substantial notice of this forecast prior to embarking on their outdoor excursions. Unfortunately, some people even lost their lives in the process of them not being aware of the rapidly changing weather conditions which quickly came into place.

Sadly, in the earlier parts of the 20th century, there was not nearly enough certainty in real-time operational forecasting to give people all across the United States enough lead-time to prepare for dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing strong gusty winds and tornadoes. This certainly was a dangerous time to be living across the Great Plains region of the United States.

Truly was one of the more historic weather events to impact the Great Lakes region as late as mid-to-late November across the span of the 20th Century!
