2006 Winter Storm Starts off Meteorological Winter! (credit: Meteorologist Jordan Rabinowitz)12/2/2016 DISCUSSION: Looking back in more recent times (i.e., back on December 1st, 2006), quite an impressive and wide-ranging winter storm impacted sections of the South-Central and North-Central United States. As clearly seen in this visble satellite, there was a vast amount of snow cover covering areas all the way from northeastern Oklahoma to northern Michigan with 6 + inches across this 1,000 + mile swath. This storm also produced significant freezing rain which impacted the St. Louis area and caused many travel delays both on the national highways including (but not limited to) Interstate-70 as well as at regional, national, and international airports. Moreover, an estimated 500 or more homes and businesses were without power in the St. Louis area after this storm which took the regional power companies some decent time to fully recover from. Certainly for snow lovers this was a fun early December treat; while for others this was an early winter hassle.
