DISCUSSION: Within the last couple of days, the skies in and around the forward progression of Major Hurricane Irma have continued to be shut-down due to the inherent hazard associated with the presence of this powerful tropical cyclone. However, during any storm, there is always at least one or two more interesting stories and this happens to be one of those for Hurricane Irma. Back on Wednesday (September 6th, 2017) a Delta flight emanating from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport opted to complete its final approach and landing in Puerto Rico's Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in spite of the ominous approach of Major Hurricane Irma. Moreover, within 40 minutes of being on the ground, it successfully took off and headed back out to John F. Kennedy International Airport as Major Hurricane Irma was completing its final approach to parts of northeastern Puerto Rico. Although many flights have previously been and still are continuing to do their best to avoid going anywhere near this powerful tropical cyclone, it just goes to show that some pilots are still willing to risk it; despite the inherent crosswind risks associated with attempting to land a commercial aircraft in the vicinity of a powerful approaching tropical cyclone.
