Discussion: As a strengthening low-pressure system which is currently moving through Eastern Canada and towards the Western Atlantic Ocean, a strong high-pressure system is building into the Intermountain Western US. As this ridge slides off to the east, the pressure-gradient (the rate of change in surface pressure values with distance) across the Midwest region will greatly increase. The resulting effect of this increasing pressure-gradient will be increasing wind speeds at the surface with gusts as high as 50 mph at times through tomorrow night! See the graphic below for details courtesy of the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio.
