Significant Snowfall Coming to Parts of the Western United States! (credit: NWS Hanford, California)
DISCUSSION: As the next incoming atmospheric river continues to move closer and closer to its maximum impact period (i.e., in terms of moisture depth positioned above areas further inland), there will be a substantial increase in both the intensity and accumulations of snowfall across the Sierra Nevadas and the Cascades mountain ranges across central/northern California. As a result of the inherent dangers associated with the heavy snowfall tied to this forecast, be sure to allow for significantly extra travel time to get out and about during the next 48 to 72 hours since many interstate and state/county routes may become impassible during the course of this upcoming wintry event. If you need to travel via commercial air travel, be sure to call ahead or go online to check the status of your flight priot to heading to the given airport.
