AMAZING ROTATION CAPTURED EARLIER TODAY! (credit: NWS Newport/Morehead City, North Carolina)5/5/2016
DISCUSSION: As strong storms fired up across parts of the Mid-Atlantic region earlier this afternoon, some of the storms moved through an environment in which there were increasingly stronger veering (i.e., winds turning clockwise with height) wind profiles. As the storms moved into more vertically sheared environments, they develop stronger low to mid-level rotation and a few spot of tornadoes such as this one which formed in North Wilmington, North Carolina earlier today. Though this was certainly not considered to be a classic severe weather outbreak, it was certainly a significant event across these areas which do not as frequently see tornadic thunderstorms.
