DISCUSSION: A few days over 100 years ago, a major tornado ripped through sections of La Plata, Maryland; killing and injuring many people at an elementary school. Sadly, in the earlier parts of the 20th century, there was not nearly enough certainty in real-time operational forecasting to give people all across the United States enough lead-time to prepare for dangerous thunderstorms capable of producing strong gusty winds and tornadoes. This certainly was a dangerous time to be living across the Great Plains region of the United States.
