Raging Floodwaters Devastate Communities Across Southern Missouri (credit: Meteorologist Wes Peery)5/1/2017
DISCUSSION: As heavy rainfall continued during this past weekend, many rivers and streams across the state of Missouri overran their banks which led to widespread flooding across the state. As shown in the video footage above, one such example was this particular case in which a home was swallowed up by Gasconade River as flood waters ran this home into a bridge located in Jerome, Missouri. It is important to note that even 6 inches or more of flowing floodwaters can begin to move some smaller automobiles out of place. When you get to a foot or more or flowing rushing floodwaters, you can begin to inflict significant damage to various commercial and residential infrastructure. Considering the fact that there were several feet of rainfall accumulated in some of these areas, it goes without saying that this was a "recipe for widespread damage and total devastation in some cases for that matter." Therefore, as the National Weather Service Weather-Ready Nation initiatives always hit upon, when you approach rushing floodwaters "Turn Around, Don't Down."
