DISCUSSION: As a low-pressure deepened yesterday to the south of the Alps induced a strong surge of warm/moist air northward during the period from Saturday evening through the first half of the day on Sunday, the stage was set for a prolific mid-Spring snowstorm. Due to the combination of cold-air essentially "locked-up" at higher elevations and the orographic enhancement of air parcels being lifted due to the presence of increasingly sloped terrain along the southern periphery of the Alps mountains, heavy snowfall developed persisted across the Western Alps! Attached below is a great shot of the heavy snowfall which accumulated as of Sunday morning (local time) across parts of Northern Italy!
