DISCUSSION: As a potent low-pressure system pushed through parts of Western Europe, very strong storms moved through various parts of Germany. The image attached in the graphic below depicts an absolutely textbook example of an arcus cloud (i.e., a low, horizontal cloud formation associated with the leading edge of thunderstorm outflow) which formed in association with an intense thunderstorm which had been moving over areas in and around Westerholt, Germany! Note how you can see the heavy rainshafts in the background portion of the image which can be denoted by the regions of lower visibility just beneath the darker cloud-base which wraps around the periphery of the thunderstorm in view! DISCUSSION: As a fairly strong low-pressure system marched across parts of Central/Eastern Europe over the past couple of days, another round of strong to severe storms erupted over many places in and around Turkey. This particular shot captured a strong supercell thunderstorm which had been positioned over Edirne, Turkey as of much earlier this evening (local time)! Over the next day or so, there will remain to be a reasonable threat for additional severe weather as warm, moist air continues to sustain more than sufficient instability combined with the necessary trigger as provided by the aforementioned low-pressure system! DISCUSSION: Looking over towards Eastern Europe and Western Russia, there was yet another round of rather impressive storms complete with areas of gorgeous mammatus clouds as seen below! These clouds predominantly form due to the presence of strong sinking motion both near and just beneath the cloud base due to the strong gradients in moisture and/or ice content. Just a very impressive display of mammatus clouds across Western Russia! For more high-impact weather content across Europe, click here!
DISCUSSION: As another strengthening low-pressure system makes its way across parts of Western Europe over the next several days, strong southerly flow will build into place across parts of Southern and Southwestern Europe! As a result, strong warm-air advection will help to bring temperatures close to or in excess of 35° Celsius into the region! This will also help to promote greater air parcel buoyancy and a greater likelihood of storm development in the presence of increased atmospheric moisture content! SEA-EFFECT SNOW APPROACHING ISTANBUL, TURKEY BACK IN MID-FEBRUARY OF LAST YEAR! (credit: Ferhat Gül)4/17/2016
DISCUSSION: Despite this not being a recent event, similar events occurred during the middle to latter parts of this past winter across parts Southern Europe (including but limited to Southern/Central Croatia, Italy, Turkey, and Slovenia)! Note the evident contrast in the visibility from just inside to just outside of this particular snow squall! A similar situation unfolded during the recent Historic Buffalo Lake-Effect snow storm back in November 2014! As in that event, this event clearly displayed the intense whiteout conditions just inside of the lake-effect snow squall moving onshore!
DISCUSSION: As yet another low-pressure system makes it's way through Western and Central Europe, another round of strong to severe storms erupted in the presence of increased atmospheric instability as well as strong warm/moist air being injected into the region via strengthened southerly flow. Over the next few days, this intense convection will continue pushing east as the predominant forcing within the warm sector of this low-pressure system continues heading deeper into Eastern Europe and beyond! As noted in the post below (courtesy of Meteo Europe), there have been over 48,000 lightning strikes detected in just the last 12 hours alone; marking the biggest day for total lightning strikes thus far in 2016 across Western Europe!
DISCUSSION: As a deepening low-pressure system continued advancing across parts of Western and Central Europe yesterday afternoon and evening, several areas of strong to severe thunderstorms erupted. In some places; including this shot captured in Podkarpackie, Poland, a few supercell thunderstorms developed and produced substantial hail and wind damage in various locations across Southern Poland! Just goes to prove that analogous to the Great Plains region in the United States, there can be destructive and life-threatening severe weather events across Western and Central Europe as well in the early to mid-Spring period.
DISCUSSION: Earlier today (local time), a large area of strong to severe thunderstorm flared up across parts of Western Europe. As the day progressed from the morning to the afternoon hours and daytime heating persisted, a number of discrete storms became particularly strong. As observed in the following video, you will note the presence of between quarter and golf ball-sized hail falling for a period of time!
STRONG THUNDERSTORMS PRODUCING PLENTY OF LIGHTNING ACROSS EASTERN EUROPE! (credit: Meteo Europe)4/6/2016
DISCUSSION: Beginning earlier this afternoon (local time over in Eastern Europe), there have a large area of strong thunderstorms heading east across Central and now Eastern Europe! As indicated in the graphic from blitzortung.org, you can clearly see the intense areas of lightning strikes most densely concentrated across Northeastern Slovakia, Western Ukraine, and Belarus this evening with the white to yellowish-colored regions indicate locations of lightning strikes which have occurred with the past 30 to 40 minutes. Of particular interest in the especially impressive lightning density across Central and Eastern Belarus as seen in the northern portion of the red-outlined region in the graphic below!
DISCUSSION: As a deepening low-pressure system brought heavy rainfall (and even some flooding to parts of Central and Southern Spain earlier today, there were also some nice thunderstorms across parts of Germany! The short time lapse video below shows the evolution of one particular storm which blossomed over Erzebirge, Germany! Note how during the course of this short clip you can make out the region of strongest vertical motion within the developing thunderstorm through seeing the thunderstorm's main updraft rising quickly through the lower-to-middle troposphere!
DISCUSSION: As a strengthening low-pressure system made its approach towards portions of Western Europe earlier today and this evening (local time), several areas of convective storms flared up ahead of the encroaching cold front. Some of these produced substantial lighting; including this storm which moved over parts of London, England! During the video, note how you can identify the various stepped leaders branching off of the main strike channel! Very nice footage captured by Jack Wickes!
DISCUSSION: A weak shortwave moved through parts of Western Europe out ahead of a stronger low-pressure system projected to impact Central and Southern Spain with a high-confidence potential for heavy rainfall which could lead to widespread flooding! However, as storms rolled through parts of Western Europe earlier this evening, stunning shots of cloud-to-ground lightning shots were captured across parts of Europe including this photograph captured by Rick Bekker near Zwijndrecht in the Netherlands!
DISCUSSION: Earlier today a strengthening low pressure system moved through parts of Western Europe (including parts of Germany) bringing moderate to heavy snow such as this short piece of footage capturing snow falling at a pretty good rate! Not too unusual for parts of Germany this time of year despite the onset of Spring; particularly across some of higher terrain of southwest Germany near mountains that approach the border with northeast France!
