This last July was the second hottest July on record, contributing to the second warmest year on record. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “The July temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was 1.49°F above the 20th century average of 60.4°F, the second highest value for July in the 138-year period of record, behind 2016 by 0.09°F. July 2017 marks the 41st consecutive July and the 391st consecutive month with temperatures at least nominally above the 20th century average.” There have been much warmer than average temperatures occurring in every continent, excluding Antarctica. Record high temps have been established in Africa, Asia, and Australia.

These unprecedented raises in temperatures have an affect around the world. Sea ice in the Arctic has been on the decline, averaging more than 16% below climatological values. The Antarctic has underachieved in sea ice extent, gaining 4.5% less than the climatological values.

DISCUSSION: As various emissions from various fossil fuels and other anthropogenic (i.e., human-derived) by-products of day-to-day life continue to persist and quite possibly increase with time, there are expected to be corresponding consequences on both domestic and international temperature trends as we move forward in time. Having said that, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as well as other scientific committees have continued to pursue/investigate the likelihood of variable temperature changes.  On that note, there are clear indications that there will be substantial warming in the coming years and decades nation-wide as various human-derived factors come together to trigger a notable increase in the number of days above both 85°F, 90°F, 95°F, and 100°F + .  Hence, there is little to no doubt that the planet will continue to experience more net warming in many places which will amplify the net issues of planetary warming.  To get an estimate of what can be expected closer to where you live, click on the following interactive link.
