Strong Convective Downburst Impacts Parts of Mona Vale, Australia! (credit: Adam Williams)12/6/2016
DISCUSSION: As a follow-up to my last post concerning the severe weather event across parts of eastern/southeastern Australia on during the day on Monday, here is another neat angle on this event from another location from within the city of Mona Vale, Australia. As a low-pressure system gradually moved across parts of eastern Australia during day on Monday, there were several areas that were impacted by severe thunderstorms that (in some cases) produced instances of small hail as well as as strong damaging winds. These type of events are quite common during the heart of the Southern Hemispheric summer as a result of the fact that even low-pressure systems which propagate across the Australian outback and cause shorter "pulse-type" air mass thunderstorms often do not last for an incredibly long time. However, while they are at their maximum intensity and as these convective storms ingest available atmospheric instability in their vicinity, they can often become rather intense. As shown in the footage above (as captured by Adam Williams) clearly illustrates this concept as this road located somewhere just outside the city of Mona Vale (a northern suburb of Sydney, Australia) was hit by very strong winds from a intense thunderstorm which propagated through the region.
