More Storms To Move Through Southern and Western Puerto Rico! (credit: NWS San Juan, Puerto Rico)5/31/2016
DISCUSSION: As several weak pulses of energy continue to move along and past the southern parts of Puerto Rico. In the wake of these pulses of energy have come scattered convective cells which have produced heavy downpours and brief wind gusts up to 40-50 MPH at times within some of the stronger downdrafts! Though this is quite typical of the Caribbean for there to be two daily maximums in tropical convective activity (i.e., one in the morning as the sun begins to rise above the horizon and heat up the lowest parts of the atmosphere and one just after the maximum heating of the day when the most energy tends to be present within the atmosphere). As observed throughout the day today, there were actually several rounds of heavy showers with a few embedded thunderstorms which propagated across several parts of Puerto Rico!

DISCUSSION: As is often the case across the Caribbean, today is just another classic example of pop-up (i.e., popcorn) convection across parts of Central and Western Puerto Rico. As impressive as these storms were, they were moving very quickly off to the northwest and over the Atlantic Ocean. Nonetheless, a great example of Caribbean-style thunderstorms at their best (i.e., a classic example of pulse-convection over Central/Western Puerto Rico.

DISCUSSION: Across the Central to Eastern Caribbean Sea, there are large areas of clouds blossoming as of earlier this morning associated with an increasing threat for heavier showers and embedded thunderstorms for later this afternoon and this evening (local time). Through looking at this visible satellite image as of earlier this morning, it is abundantly clear that there was a decently large area of deeper clouds developing just to the northeast of Puerto Rico. As these deeper convective towers begin moving to the west through the day, heavier rainfall will begin to impact Eastern, Central, and ultimately Western parts of Puerto Rico. Note that the higher terrain of Puerto Rico will likely observe heavier rainfall due to the orographic enhancement triggered by the moistened air-mass moving over the more mountainous regions of Puerto Rico.
